In Perth today, India reached the modest target of 234 runs set by Sri Lanka in 46.4 overs.
Unbroken seventh wicket partnership between R Ashwin and Ravinder Jadeja yielded 53 runs, played a crucial role in ensuring the victory.
While Ashwin was unbeaten on 30, Jadeja was not out on 24. Virat Kohli was the top scorer with a fine knock of 77.
Previously, the election to beat after winning the toss, Sri Lanka made 233 for 8 in stipulated 50 overs. Dinesh made Chandimal 64.
Ashwin, who also took three wickets in Sri Lanka's innings was declared "Man of the Match".
India had lost to hosts Australia in their opening encounter on Sunday. The next match will be played between India and Australia in Adelaide on February 12.
