Clarke's batting has improved with Australia's captaincy: Ponting

Former Captain Ricky Ponting said his successor Michael Clarke became a better hitter with the Australian captaincy.

On both counts, Ponting's decision on March 29 last year to divest himself of leadership has worked out, with the captains past and present unite for a record partnership of 288 the SCG against India.

Clarke celebrated his finest accomplishment on a cricket field a century inaugural trople and the highest score by an Australian on the ground where he was raised.

He now averages above 54.9 since assuming the captaincy on a permanent basis; his career average. Before accepting the job, his average was 46.49.

Ponting said: "his record would suggest that he prospered as a captain. It was probably pretty similar to me when I took office. I know that my batting average rose greatly and Michael has and will continue to if he keeps playing the way he has since he was captain.

"You just know that there are people out there who will enjoy what comes with being captain. Things that happens on the field, bowling changes, changes to the field and all that kind of stuff, that is the easy part of the captain of a team of international cricket ".

"That is sometimes the stuff that can knock it up a bit. What I saw with Michael, as if it were, it has the ability to separate their batting captaincy. He said that he wants to get up and get ahead in the field and he has done so terribly well, "The Age said Ponting.

Clearly, these are things Ponting has not lost since standing down after the World Cup, although many people have questioned place the 37-year-old in the team since then.
