Patient Cook strengthens England

Alastair Cook made a patient century give England the edge on the first day of the first Test match against South Africa at the Oval on Thursday.

Cook made 114 not out as England overcomes the loss of Captain Andrew Strauss before reach 267 for three at the end.

Cook shared a second wicket partnership of 170-run with Jonathan Trott (71) and a third-wicket stand with 81-run Kevin Pietersen, who made 42.

Cook and Trott came together without a run on the Board after Strauss was leg before wicket to Morne Morkel off the fourth ball of the match.

But Cook and Trott were largely desia on a dry tone, easy-paced as they rebuilt the innings of England with sensible batting, just playing the ball when needed or when they might pick off loose deliveries.

South Africa highly rated pace attack was neutralized by the solid batting and a dry tone, easy to beat.

With the number one ranking in Test cricket at the stake, it had been expected that the series would be a battle between two exceptional pace attack but the South Africans were forced to settle for most of the day.

Tourists used spin bowlers for 21 of 90 overs sent down.

The left-handed Cook showed impeccable shot selection as he reached his 20th Test century off 222 balls with 11 fours, four and a top-edged hook for six off Dale Steyn.

By the end he had faced another 61 deliveries without adding another limit.

Trott 162 balls and hit nine fours, scoring a high percentage of his runs on the leg side, before he was caught behind when he edged a drive against Morkel, not always fully forward a ball after obtaining a bouncer from Morkel.

Pietersen threatened to play a dominant innings until he gloved a hook shot against Jacques Kallis three balls before the second new ball was due.

There is a second catch to AB de Villiers, who took over as the best active wicketkeeper after the withdrawal applied to injury by Mark Boucher.

Strauss's dismissal justified the decision by South Africa to give the new ball to Steyn Morkel instead. It was the seventh time in nine games that Strauss had fallen to the tall fast bowler.

With Morkel bowling around the wicket to the left-handed, Strauss was trapped on the crease to a ball angled him. Umpire Steve Davis has turned down an appeal by South Africans, who called for a review which showed that the ball had hit the inside of the leg stump.

Morkel finished the day as the most successful bowler for South Africa, taking two for 18 in 44 overs.

Rain delayed the start by 15 minutes and the spotlight was turned on for 25 minutes after the start as heavy cloud rolled in. But time has eliminated and most of the rest of the game of the day was in sunlight.

All-round Sri Lanka trump sloppy India

India fell for the second consecutive defeat at the Commonwealth Bank ODI series Down Under as Nuwan Kulasekara celebrates taking the wicket of Sachin effort Tendulkara occasionally seen losing to Sri Lanka by 51 runs in Brisbane. The result means that India must not only win both their remaining games, but will also be dependent on other results to ensure their place in the final best-of-three.

The loss seemed inevitable after India's top three batsmen were back in the hut with only 54 runs on the board while chasing a target of 290 set by Sri Lanka. Two of these wickets went to the man-of-the-match Nuwan Kulasekara who benefited from sticking to the principles of good line and length.

Captain Virender Sehwag was out for a duck to a very poor shot only the second ball of persecution. Tendulkar looked good to begin with, but only flattered to deceive when he cut the ball into his stumps when on 22. Gautam Gambhir, who despite having two scores in the 90s this series to open the batting, was dropped to number three and again looked in shape before he guided a ball Kulasekera to Thisara Perera in the gully.

Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina did stage a comeback and stitched a 92-run partnership that was helped by a recovery of surface Lanka. Raina has a lucky let off when four as Dilshan failed to hold the off chance Angelo Mathews. Virat Kohli had two escapes itself both Dinesh Chandimal complimentary deep mid-wicket. First 14 Thisara Perera off and then at 32 Lasith Malinga off.

The implementation rate was desired, however, constantly crawling toward the north. Raina departed for 32 after receiving a tip off Maharoof, Kohli and when followed by a 66 overs later, was written on the wall.

Irfan Pathan threw his bat around a Quickfire 47 in a final attempt of some heroism, but a win was not in the cards. The rest of the batting folded easily and India were bowled out for 238 with 29 balls to spare.

Earlier, Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat. Suspension of a match Dhoni for India's poor rate against Australia on Virender Sehwag was meant for India ahead of Parthiv and have a look at goalkeeper. Ashwin came back to the XI, while Rohit Sharma and Zaheer were 'rested'.

Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan put in a position of opening 95-run island that gave the nation a solid start and configure the rest of the innings. The pair brought the first 50 races in just 45 deliveries, but the slower rate of implementation thereafter. The Indian pace bowlers were guilty of throwing a ball too short in the early rounds, but then found a better length.

Jayawardene was the first man to go when at 45, he pulled a short ball from Irfan Pathan who was incredibly held on to Sehwag for a dip in the short mid-wicket. India followed with two quick wickets - Ashwin induce a slight advantage of a set Dilshan when he was 51.

Kumar Sangakkara was the man next to be fired as Umesh Yadav sent back to just eight. Sri Lanka however forged another partnership with Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne reach the crease. His management position of a ball-71 had his side to 195 before stumps Chandimal were supplanted by Pathan.

Departure Chandimal not hurt Lanka. Angelo Mathews was quickly into action and started to violence against Indian attack. Mathews scored 49 off just 37 deliveries and co-author of an outbreak in late Thirimanne before the latter was in the penultimate over. The last 10 overs brought 91 runs Sri Lanka and gave India a target of 290 to chase.

The game did see its share of drama, when the gunner Thirimanne (who did eventurally 62) was caught backing up too far, while the non-striker's end. The player - R Ashwin saw it before your own back foot fell and cut the handles off to 'Mankad' Thirimanne. The middle order batsman was out, and technically should have been back in the pavilion, but a brief discussion between the field umpires, Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar requested a postponement.

With the victory, Sri Lanka moved into second place in the tri-series and now with 11 points, three behind Australia and ahead of India.

Haddin omission lacked clarity - players' chief

Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin understood that he was being rested for a day of duty, after a poor test series against India and selectors could have handled better their omission, according to the Players Association chief Paul Marsh.

Haddin was left out for the first three games of the triangular series against India and Sri Lanka, with chief selector John Inverarity citing the need for the player being "rested" for future international obligations.

But it was forgotten again at a 14-man squad named this week for the next two matches against Sri Lanka on Friday and India on Sunday, provoking accusations from former players and current confused messages from the jury.

His replacement Matt Wade kept his place in the squad after scoring a 16 and, following a match-winning half-century on his one day debut against India in the series debut in Melbourne.

Australian Cricketers Association chief Marsh said Haddin, at least, was aware of where he was.

"He told me he had communicated with him that I wanted to try Matthew Wade," Marsh told Reuters in a telephone interview.

"It seems a lot of talk came from the line 'at rest'.

"From the standpoint of a player, we are convinced that she was treated OK. He could have been handled better from a public perspective."

Former Australia captain Steve Waugh described "enforced rest" Haddin as confusing as the wicketkeeper's team-mate Shane Watson said he felt sorry for him being in "limbo."

Local media have lined up to criticize the newly created board, which replaced the former headed by Andrew Hilditch last year after an evaluation of team performance.

The Argus Review, launched following the humiliating defeat of Australia 3-1 in the Ashes series to England at home last year, criticized the panel prior to selection decisions and confused because he could not make the appropriate succession planning.

Haddin will play a home game Sheffield Shield for New South Wales this week, he struggles to regain his place in the team.

"He has a week that I hope he is not answering these questions over and he can get a very good Sheffield Shield game under your belt to score some runs, take some catches, and a guy comes out this week much happier he is right now, "former Test captain Ricky Ponting told reporters.

Bopara warns Pakistan can hit back

Return to the form batsman Ravi Bopara, warned on Wednesday for EnglandEngland Ravi Bopara plays a shot during the second ODI against any complacency Pakistanavoid against a dangerous team in Pakistan, despite running into a 2-0 lead in their one day international series.
England won the first match by 130 runs on Monday and then doubled the lead with a sweaty 20-run victory in the second on Wednesday - both in Abu Dhabi. Bopara hit centuries and a half in both games and helped his captain Alastair Cook - who hit successive centuries - to help England post challenging total in both games.
But Bopara warned Pakistan can still recover the last two games here on Saturday and Tuesday. "Any series where you go 2-0 up is very good," said 26-year-old. "But we're keeping our feet on the ground. We know the test series that Pakistan is capable of. They are a very unpredictable team," said Bopara.
Pakistan won the three-Test series 3-0 earlier.
Bopara part of the England team, which lost 5-0 in India last year, said a victory of this magnitude in a position sub-continent would be fine. "It will be a huge thing for us to win out here. We had a record of a good day at the sub-continent so it's a great thing for us to win. This will give us confidence to know that we can do it under conditions -continent. "

Bopara warned against thinking a 4-0 victory. "I do not like to think so. We did this in the past. Individually we have a bit dizzy and things go wrong. So we're not going to look too far ahead. Let's just keep doing what we've done in the last couple of matches and worry with our skills and dealing with the Pakistan bowling line-up, "said Bopara.

Bopara, who scored so far in 1668 71 one-day international, said his fitness was pleasant. "I feel good. I felt much better today than I did in the first game," Bopara said his 58 on Monday when he added 131 with Cook for the third wicket.
"I was getting used to the bowlers and it was my second game since October. It makes a huge difference once you had that time at the crease. The good thing is cook is in great shape. I hope he can go to the third combine and get some more clues, "said Bopara.
Bopara said he tried to absorb the pressure. "This has been a huge thing for me. We have to absorb the pressure, because it will be difficult in the first 15 or 20 minutes," he said.
"It's easier as the innings went on. Once you're in about fiveovers, you get used to the pace of the wicket, the players. It is much easier."Bopara, who played one Test against India last year, said he was not thinking far ahead in his career.
"I'm not looking where I am right now. I remember in the summer against India, I had a good series, but then I went to India and not a series so good. Things can change so quickly. I just I'm keeping my feet on the ground. I'm just thinking (Saeed) Ajmal and how I'll deal with it. "
