Alastair
Cook made a patient century give England the edge on the first day of
the first Test match against South Africa at the Oval on Thursday.
Cook made 114 not out as England overcomes the loss of Captain Andrew Strauss before reach 267 for three at the end.
Cook
shared a second wicket partnership of 170-run with Jonathan Trott (71)
and a third-wicket stand with 81-run Kevin Pietersen, who made 42.
Cook
and Trott came together without a run on the Board after Strauss was
leg before wicket to Morne Morkel off the fourth ball of the match.
But
Cook and Trott were largely desia on a dry tone, easy-paced as they
rebuilt the innings of England with sensible batting, just playing the
ball when needed or when they might pick off loose deliveries.
South Africa highly rated pace attack was neutralized by the solid batting and a dry tone, easy to beat.
With
the number one ranking in Test cricket at the stake, it had been
expected that the series would be a battle between two exceptional pace
attack but the South Africans were forced to settle for most of the day.
Tourists used spin bowlers for 21 of 90 overs sent down.
The
left-handed Cook showed impeccable shot selection as he reached his
20th Test century off 222 balls with 11 fours, four and a top-edged hook
for six off Dale Steyn.
By the end he had faced another 61 deliveries without adding another limit.
Trott
162 balls and hit nine fours, scoring a high percentage of his runs on
the leg side, before he was caught behind when he edged a drive against
Morkel, not always fully forward a ball after obtaining a bouncer from
Morkel.
Pietersen
threatened to play a dominant innings until he gloved a hook shot
against Jacques Kallis three balls before the second new ball was due.
There
is a second catch to AB de Villiers, who took over as the best active
wicketkeeper after the withdrawal applied to injury by Mark Boucher.
Strauss's dismissal justified the decision by South Africa to give the new ball to Steyn Morkel instead. It was the seventh time in nine games that Strauss had fallen to the tall fast bowler.
With Morkel bowling around the wicket to the left-handed, Strauss was trapped on the crease to a ball angled him. Umpire
Steve Davis has turned down an appeal by South Africans, who called for
a review which showed that the ball had hit the inside of the leg
stump.
Morkel finished the day as the most successful bowler for South Africa, taking two for 18 in 44 overs.
Rain delayed the start by 15 minutes and the spotlight was turned on for 25 minutes after the start as heavy cloud rolled in. But time has eliminated and most of the rest of the game of the day was in sunlight.
